Malem: Very Strong Deceit by Perversion and Concealment

Bedwetting Store and the Malem bedwetting alarm are classic examples of exaggerated marketing claims and unreasonable attempts to get sales at the expense of deceitful tactics and planning. This time, we will analyze the Malem Bed-Side Alarm. The product I available at

On the Malem page, the manufacturer says “The most comprehensive Enuresis Alarm in the world” We are left baffled and confused. How do you come up with this claim? What makes your alam the most comprehensive alarm in the world? Have you compared it to other bed-side alarms? Why do you believe that it is comprehensive?
The Webster dictionary defines comprehensive as “complete; including all or nearly all elements or aspects of something.” So why is the Malem Bed-Side bedwetting alarm comprehensive? What does it have that other alarms don’t.
Here are some other claims from both the Malem website and the Bedwetting Store website

*         “the most comprehensive and adaptable Enuresis Alarm available.”
How is this alarm adaptable? Does it adapt over time? Is it a self learning bedwetting alarm? What is the science behind this claim? Patent? Research? Again, why is it comprehensive?

*         “Ergonomically designed smart and colourful."
It appears that this alarm is similar in shape and form to all other Malem alarms. Then why is this the only Malem alarm that is “ergonomically designed”. How is it smart? Again proof, proof, proof! Colorful? You call one Red color colorful?

*         “with a reliable, rust-proof, embossed and comfortable plastic Bed-Mat."
Thank you for letting us know that plastic is rust-proof. This was highly educational and inspiring. We now know that a plastic mat is rust proof, smart and comprehensive.

*         “Volume control with minimum preset.”
We have absolutely no idea what this means and we believe neither does the manufacturer.

*         “A unique bedside device for children who don't want to wear an alarm
The Bedwetting Store like to call all their alarms unique. Doesn’t anyone else make bed-side alarms? What about Nite Train’r?

*         “This unique alarm unit has a wide range of sound options that allow you to pick the one that optimally meets your needs..”
Evidence? How was this determined? Etc. A gross exaggeration.

*         “A flashing light permits parents and children to locate the unit in a dark room."
Does the unit fall off at night? How bright is the light? Why is no information provided on sound and light?

*         “Variable volume control."
How many variable levels? 1, 5, 100? Why don’t you mention that? What is the volume step size? How loud is volume at 8 inches?

*         “Long lasting AA alkaline batteries - never a danger of electrical shock like older style units
Shock? The older Malem bedwetting alarms shocked children? Thank you for letting us know that. How long is your battery life? Why don’t you provide details?

To truly compare Malem with all relevant competitors in today’s marketplace, look at http://www.urinealarms.com/Wired_Alarm_Chart.html . This is the most comprehensive set of data and facts about bedwetting alarms that we have seen. Malem does not fare well. This explains why Malem and the Bedwetting Store resort to deceit and propaganda to promote the Malem bedwetting alarm!

The Bedwetting Store is the only seller who advertises and continues to sell the Malem Bedwetting Alarm. All other sellers have either realized the truth about the Malem Bedwetting Alarm or have abandoned it, but the Bedwetting Store continues its deceit.

Note:
Malem(TM) and the Bedwetting Store have a very large number of entries about their deceit in this blog. There are so many more entries and much more serious bad activities attributable to Malem and the Bedwetting Store, so that Malem and the Bedwetting Store have significantly more entries than all other manufacturers combined. You can read all of the Malem and Bedwetting Store deceit entries on this blog.

DryBuddy: No Deceit

DryBuddy’s web site was a very refreshing experience after having seen so many deceitful sites. Here is a site that is loaded with detailed information about its bed wetting alarm. We have yet to see a manufacturer’s web site that provides this level of detail about its product.

We even looked for details that we have found wanting on other sites. As an example, the DryBuddy site does not provide the size and weight of its sensor. But it explicitly says that “Dimensions, weights and other physical characteristics can be found on …” and provides three other sites that contain this information, including the site that we frequently refer to at http://www.urinealarms.com/. This is perfectly acceptable and not deceitful.

For nitpicking purposes, we checked if the loudness of its audio alarm was provided. It was not. But here DryBuddy states: “Note: The DryBuddy system's unique ability to use any 120V AC device as an alarm allows the users to use any 120V AC device or devices of their choice as alarms, such as a radio, music device, buzzer, bed shaker, and/or bright light. … Additional alarms can be added to the audible alarm that may have been provided with the DryBuddy system. This gives users tremendous flexibility in using whatever alarms suit them.” Consequently, with such a high degree of flexibility for the user to add appropriate alarms if the provided alarm is inadequate in any way, we consider matters to not be deceitful.

For further nitpicking purposes, we looked for an instruction manual for the DryBuddy and could not find one. But on their order page there was an explicit statement that “The DryBuddy Instruction Manual and product support are provided only with the Complete DryBuddy System.” We find this to also be without deceit. Some other manufacturers also do not provide instruction manuals on their site, and we must assume that they are provided with their product.

As mentioned previously in other reviews, we are not here to comment on the characteristics of a product, or the policies of the manufacturer. We examine the web site to identify where false or grossly exaggerated information without substantiation is provided, or critical issues concealed which could deceive a reader. We were unable to find such deceit. The product was described in much detail. Some readers may find the details to be excessive, but again that is not deceit.

Although we are not endorsing DryBuddy’s web site, we certainly consider it a good model for its comprehensive information and lack of deceit. This is particularly important when you compare this site to some others in which we have found very strong deceit. These deceitful sites may look attractive and “jazzy,” but the shovels full of deceit in them can make them dangerous and misleading for the unsuspecting reader. Or they contain little or meaningless information about their product, and with important issues not addressed or even identified and referenced.

Bedwetting Store: Strong Deceit by Perversion and Concealment

We started by looking at the Bedwetting Store web site. One of the things we look for first are how easy it is to contact the seller (web site owner). We found this website: http://bedwettingstore.com/CTUS.html but could not find a toll free number to reach the company. There is a form that asks us to till in details on the including name and contact details and suggests that someone will contact us back. But whe if I need technical assistance? Should we fill in the form and wait and pray that someone receives it and replies back to it? There is no contact address, no fax number, no information at all. A single line says: “You should receive a response back from one of our experts within the next business day.” Who are these “Experts”. Are they technical experts? Are they bedwetting experts? Are they doctors? Whoa re they and what makes them experts?
All of this make it more difficult to contact the Bedwetting Store, but it leaves us wondering if the why Bedwetting Store is so concerned about their privacy and/or product, that they are concealing their contact number and address and also not providing ease of contact. Providing a no-name mailing address and no toll-free number does allow the Bedwetting Store to ignore correspondence that they do not wish to address. And, of course, can result in possible delays. This waves red warning flags in our mind about the Bedwetting Store. Strong deceit by concealment.

The Bedwetting Store site states “Orders are shipped through the postal service or UPS and typically arrive in 2 to 8 days.” We asked ourselves – 8 days? Why would it take 8 days to reach us? Is this normal? How are you shipping the product?
The unbiased website http://urinealarms.com/Wired_Alarm_Chart.html has information from a number of alarm manufacturers and we notice that a lot of information from Malem Rodgers and Dry-Me is missing because it has not been reported by the Bedwetting Store. In our minds, this is another red flag and deceit by concealment.

Several other claims on the web site include:
·         “All necessary features”. What and which features? This is like saying that this alarm is the “best.”
·         “With the use of instant clip, the setup has become very much easier and safer.” No information is provided about this instant clip.
·         “Selectable sensitivity.” What? How? Nothing is mentioned on the site.
·         “Extra loud sound.” How loud? It would be nice to provide this in dB for what the user would hear with the alarm in its normal location during use.
Deceit by perversion and concealment.

On the link http://bedwettingstore.com/return-policy.html the Bedwetting Store states “Often alarms or watches act erratic due to low batteries or they just need to be reset.” We are confused how or why they came up with this conclusion. It makes us believe that the Bedwetting Store wants to avoid getting stuck with their own products and blame it on low batteries.
At this point, we are so “turned off” by the Bedwetting Store, their website, practices and support and would advise caution to any purchaser. We again refer you to http://urinealarms.com/Wired_Alarm_Chart.html to examine and compare bed wetting alarms.

Malem Ultimate 1: Slight Deceit by Concealment

Malem’s web site for the Ultimate 1 enuresis/bedwetting alarm is minimal. It presents the basic information about this alarm and other accessories that work with it. It essentially states what Malem is providing, and leaves the reader to figure out what functions or other characteristics may be missing. We would recommend that the reader visit a comprehensive comparison site such as http://urinealarms.com/Wired_Alarm_Chart.htmlto examine the Malem Ultimate 1 alarm’s features and also compare this alarm to other alarms to understand and identify what you are getting, and what you are paying for what you get. We only wish that some more information was provided on the site, for example that this alarm does not have a low battery indicator.

For a bedwetting alarm, using sound as its main alarm, we find the absence of loudness for the alarm to be disturbing. The reader should be interested in the loudness of the audio alarm at a typical distance from the ear where the alarm is usually placed.

For readers that want a better idea about how the Malem Ultimate 1 Alarm works and how you may use it, do not expect much information on this site.
We must also compliment Malem for not filling this site with gross exaggerations and advertising hype.

This is one site that we cannot fault in any significant manner for deceit. We only wish that that it would be more complete and informative.

Rodger Wireless: Some Deceit by Concealment

As we have previously stated, we prefer to examine the manufacturer's website for what they say and explain about their bedwetting alarm. Rodger's home site is very incomplete. Although they explain the essence of their alarms, most of the physical details (size, weight) are missing. As are clear statements about what they provide and the performance of their system. For example, Rodger mentions that their receiver can use 2 AA batteries. Are these batteries provided?
Deceit by Concealment.

This Rodger site is extra-ordinarily brief. There are many unanswered questions in our mind, and we must give their site a poor rating because of the lack of information. We must give them credit for not making extravagant or extraordinary claims, which is a plus when compared to the self-inflation of some of the other bedwetting alarm manufacturers.
Deceit by Concealment.

Because of the unusually brief nature of Rodger's web site, we are taking an exceptional liberty of looking at the site of their major reseller in the U.S. at

This site fills in many details that the Rodger site does not mention.

The site states that "A second receiver is especially important for larger homes or if your child sleeps on a different floor." Another statement that "The maximum range of the system is approximately 75 feet" suggests that the receivers are purely receivers, and do not have the ability to retransmit the signal to extend the transmission range of the alarm. So all receivers must be within this specified range of the transmitter. Please make this clear. Deceit by concealment.

The question raised earlier about whether the two AA batteries are provided is still unclear. Deceit by Concealment.

Another statement "Regular underwear/briefs are not required" suggests that regular underwear could be used. This is not so. This alarm works only with the special wired briefs. Why not explicitly state this? Deceit by Concealment.

We recognize that the loudness of the receiver's alarm sound varies with distance from the ear. As this receiver is commonly plugged into a wall electric socket, users should be interested in the loudness at some sample distances. This is deceit by concealment.

Again, we are glad that this site abstains from typical advertising hype or making claims that this is the "Best" alarm. Thank you. Overall, we appreciate the information and its completeness in the second site.

Malem Ultimate Recordable: Deceit by Perversion and Concealment

The Bedwetting Store does a good job of confusing the general buyer into believing that the Malem bedwetting alarms are the “BEST”, “POWERFUL” and “AFFORDABLE” bedwetting alarms. It is not our intent, in this blog, to approve or disapprove of an alarm for any of its attributes. A potential buyer can always look at the information on the seller’s site, and often get more complete information from a comprehensive site such as http://urinealarms.com/ which suggests a comprehensive method to select an appropriate bedwetting alarm, and also provides an exhaustive list of attributes and properties for these alarms. Our concerns primarily relate to facts being miss-stated or negative attributes not being mentioned (or concealed).

*    This unique bedwetting alarm is the first to allow you to record your own sounds or personal message.

What is unique about this bedetting alarm? The fact that you can record your own sounds OR that you can record a personal message? What is the difference in the two? Isn’t a personal message recorded in your own sound? Wouldn’t you record a message in your own sound? What’s so unique about the product?
Deceit by perversion.

*       The Malem ULTIMATE Recordable Bedwetting Alarm combines sound and vibration to help alert children who wet.
Just alert? Does it wake them up? How loud is the alarm? How effective is the alarm? How does it “COMBINE” light and sound? Is this a new law of Physics by which sound and light are combined? deceit by perversion.

*       A range of options to help stop enuresis.
Proof?  What range? Where are you coming up with these statements? List atleast 3 range of options for the Malem ultimate recordable bedwetting alarm and we will be a believer. But none of the product description or information states these ranges. Deceit by misleading and concealment.

*        This bed wetting alarm has all the features of the Malem ULTIMATE Gold alarm PLUS the ability to record a sound.
Hasn’t that been mentioned before? Why do you keep looping in circles promting the Malem bedwetting alarm? Is it because you make most money on it? Is it because you have more in stock than you can sell? Or is it because you have so much time on your hands that you think of clever little ways to confuse the public? Deceit by misleading and concealment.

*        It is slightly thicker than the Gold alarm.
Slightly? What is Slightly? Imm, 1 inch, 10 inches? Who decides slightly? You or your staff or Malem? Why is the Gold alarm being used as a reference. Why not Dri-Excel or Nytone or Dry-Me? Is it because you again want to promote the Malem Gold? Deceit by perversion.

*     No vibration is available when using the custom recording.
This is confusing. No vibration when pyaiing back a recording or when recording a sound (your personal message). If so, why? Deceit by perversion.

*        Recording a suitable sound will require trial and error
Why? Is it that hard to press a button and record your sound or personal message? Why should it take trial and error? How many such trial and error sessions will a parent have to go through? Days? Weeks? Months?
You will notice that the product has 10 5-star reviews. All of which appear doctored. By who you ask? May we say the Bedwetting Store! This leads us to believe that the Bedwetting Store may be doing that for other products in their product catalog as well. What’s to stop them? Deceit by perversion.

*       Recorded sounds (especially music) will sound much softer/quieter than the built in tones.
How much softer/quitter? Why cant you just give us users a dB number at 8 inch away so we can compare for ourselves how loud the alarm is. What is the basis for this comparison? Who are you comparing this to? The Gold Malem alarm? Why didn’t you mention it here with hopes of selling more of the Gold Malem Alarm? Deceit by perversion.

*       This bed wetting alarm is for special situations where it is important to record your own tone.
How did you come up with this conclusion? Do you have scientific data to back it up? Do you have a user base that supports this claim? Deceit by perversion and concealment.

*          Sensor attachment
No information on how to connect the sensor or how to attach it. Deceit by perversion.

*         Perfect for those who respond best to voice commands
Again, where is the evidence? You said it so we should trust it? Deceit by perversion.
